The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Type 12 is a surface-launched anti-ship missile developed as the replacement for the Type 88 shore-based anti-ship missile system. The Type 12 land platform consists on a 8x8 truck equipped with six missiles launched vertically. Japan's fiscal year 2014 plans call for the procurement of four companies with 4 units each totaling 16 units with six missiles each making up to 96 missiles. The Type 12 missile will feature improved range and accuracy compared with its predecessor. The Type 17 anti-ship missile was provided to Maya-class destroyers and has a maximum range of 400 kilometers. The active radar seeker features an active electronically steered array (AESA) technology.

The Improved Type 12 missile is intended to hit land and sea targets at distances of up to 1,200 kilometers. The missile is intended for launch from submarines using vertical launching systems. The Japanese Self-Defense Force (JSDF) Navy plans to procure the Type 12I and/or Tactical Tomahawk Block V cruise missile to gain long-range engagement capability by 2030.
The new Advanced Type 12 cruise missile may be deployed by the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) begining in 2025. The new missile prototype was unveiled in July 2024 no flight test was reported then.
